modern LEGO sets — Modern sets have more interior detail and probably more play possibilities, but lack the enclosed island environment and 360-degree playability of Eldorado Fortress. Modern sets would not be fully enclosed. However, this set has advantages: the custom base plate creates extensive terrain and play space that modern standardized-piece construction cannot match. This set also has complete enclosure allowing play from any angle.

Black Seas Barracuda — Both were available simultaneously in the Pirates line. Eldorado Fortress appears to be the flagship set of the line based on its size and complexity, while Barracuda had already been on the market for a while by the time Eldorado Fortress was released.

1970s LEGO castles — This set uses the same base plate terrain technique that was common in 1970s-80s LEGO but is no longer used in modern sets. The technique provides significant play value and terrain that cannot be easily replicated with modern standardized pieces.

10320 — As a pure play toy for kids today, the modern version has vastly more to offer.
