Identifying Minifigures

Hello everyone, I recently have decided to start purchasing bulk minifigures off of Craigslist. Being a novice LEGO enthusiast, I'm having a problem identifying the minifigures I am purchasing. For instance, I bought around 20 minifigures from someone and from doing a little bit of research, I can tell they are from the early 90's. My problem is that this person has switched the legs, torso's, heads, etc on these figures multiple times and I have no idea what parts go with what figures. Any suggestions on figuring it out? Thanks
