Can someone please help me understand gift card discounts

I see a lot of people mentioning the use of gift cards to get better deals on lego sets. I'm in the USA. Can somebody help me by explain the way to use gift cards to maximize my discount. I went onto Raise.com and set up an account and I see that I can buy a $100 TRU card for $88, but that's the best deal I could find. It didn't look there was anything worthwhile for Walmart or Amazon. So many people seem to be doing the gift card thing that I think I'm missing something. I will greatly appreciate any insight into this, or any other discounting tips. At this point the best I do is searching for discounts on Walmart, Amazon, Target, and sometimes Yoyo.com. I do use the Lego VIP program so that helps. Thanks
