Buying mint sealed retired sets as investments on 2ndary market?

Once sets are no longer in stores, is it generally considered too late to pick them up as investments? I've been looking at some of the older Star Wars UCS sets, which are constantly on eBay for a premium above the original retail price (eg: 10212 Imperial Shuttle for £499, 10221 Super Star Destroyer for £685). I could ultimately see myself filling out the whole UCS collection, but starting now I'd obviously be paying over the odds for the now retired sets. Is it too late to see any further significant gains on these if they were to be bought at these prices now, considering I'd be looking to hold them for a further 5+ years?
