When to sell?

So I have been collecting Lego seriously for a year and have amassed 300 sets. I occasionally come across bulk lots and older retired sets that I flip quickly. The investment sets are new or recently retired. If the rule of thumb is to wait 2-3 years after retirement, then technically I will not be selling till 2016-2017. Is that common?
