New member needs first-time investing advice

Hey Folks, First off, thanks for letting me join the club. So here's the deal. I found someone here in town who is selling two collections of Lego sets: One is Harry Potter and the other is Disney Cars. Each collection has at least 2 of the bigger sets (ie:Hogwarts, Hagrids Hut, Flo's Diner). The boxes all look to be in superb shape, so I'm going on the assumption that the contents match. In all, I'd say around 12-15 sets in total. This is a great deal and I'm going to check them out today. My question is...what are my "Don't buy" signs? For example, what if they say pieces are missing....or figures...or instructions? I realize these being AWOL affect value, but would like opinions on what is typically your "walk-away" point or what you're still comfortable buying later as individual pieces to fill sets.
