Collecting Minifigs vs Sets

Hi all. I'm new to Lego collecting, like so many i'm an avid player as a child and young man, now i'm older and in a position to buy Lego again i'm thinking of the future perspectives of using what i buy as an investment for the future, My question to you all is. collecting sets or collecting minifigures? and not just the the standard series minifigs but figures for say star wars or dc heroes ect..... any guidence would be great Thank you all!
