1-2 years after retirement is optimal?

I understand why 1-2 years after retirement is the optimal time to sell your retired set, as interest is possibly at it's highest. But, what happens after that time frame? For example, are complete Lego sets from the 80's or 90's basically worth scrap, or do they retain their high value. Put another way, Say I have the entire LOTR collection and they are all retired in July 2014. July 2015-July 2016 would be the best time to sell these sets. But what happens to the value on July 2018, or July 2020? Is the demand dead at that time, or is there still demand for older sets?
